This pie was served at the White House during President John Tyler tenure at the end of the 19th century. It was an old family recipe passed down from one generation to the next and originated in England. It’s a rich custard pie that melts in your mouth. A favorite in our family too!
Serves 8 | Prep time 10 minutes | Cook time 35-40 minutes
1 cup sugar
½ teaspoon of flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon lemon extract Pinch nutmeg
½ cup butter, slightly melted
1 cups milk
9-inch plain pastry pie shell
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Combine the sugar, flour, and salt, and mix well.
In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and add the vanilla, lemon extract (optional), nutmeg, and butter.
Stir in the sugar mixture. Finally, mix in the milk.
Pour the filling into an unbaked pie shell.
Bake until set and nicely browned (about 35-40 minutes).
