Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pie

Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pie

Buttermilk pie is a silky custard-like pie using buttermilk and eggs, that came from English settlers at the end of the 18th century. My grandmother used to make it to finish up a buttermilk carton when I was a child. This is her recipe.

Serves 6-8 | Prep time 20 minutes | Cook time 1 hour 45 minutes

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 ¼ cups white sugar

3 eggs

1 tablespoon flour

½ cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla Unbaked

9-inch pie shell, plain pastry

Preheat the oven to 300°F.

In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar.

Stir in the eggs, flour, buttermilk, and vanilla. Blend well.

Spread the filling in the pie shell.

Bake for about 1 hour and 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the filling comes out clean.

Let the pie cool before serving.
