Molasses Stack Cake

For special occasions, this vintage Molasses stack cake is one special food. Back in time, Pioneer weddings were incomplete without celebrating with this classic cake. It was one of the most preferred welcome recipe for special guests and this cake has never failed to make a lasting delicious impression.

Serves 4 | Prep. time 10 min. | Cooking time 20 min.



1 large egg

1 cup molasses

½ cup buttermilk

½ cup shortening or butter, melted

½ teaspoon baking powder

4 cups all-purpose flour

1-2 cups apple butter

½ teaspoon cinnamon

¼ teaspoon nutmeg


Preheat an oven to 350⁰F.

In a bowl (preferably medium-large size), combine the butter, buttermilk, egg, baking powder and molasses.

Add the nutmeg and cinnamon on top. Combine well.

Add the flour and combine again until no lumps.

Roll the mixture into a thin layer of ½-inch thick.

Cut out circles from it and place over a greased baking sheet.

Bake for about 15-20 minutes.

Cool down and spread some apple butter between each stack before serving.
